For a decade, Microsoft's Built-in Browser was used to download Google Chrome and never to be visited again. But Gone are the days, now the "Microsoft EDGE" new browser from Microsoft came up with claims "112% faster than Google Chrome", safer and featurestic than Google Chrome. 95%
Edge Built Using New Chromium Platform:
When Initially Edge released on 2015, it was built using Microsoft's own EdgeHTML browser engine. The company announced in 2018 that they are moving from their browser platform to Chromium (A free and open source web project, principally developed and maintained by Google). Chromium Uses "Blink" as their browser engine and "V8" as their javascript engine.
Microsoft launched Chromium bsaed Edge on Jan, 2020. Oh Boy, that's a game changer move for Edge, they have rekindled the browser war. Since they have moved to chromium, now edge can offer the features which chrome used to offer. On top of that, Chromium is an open source code project, all the new features can be implemented and tweaked.
Chrome Vs Edge Comparison:
With the usage Chrome has a monstrous advantage over edge, currently Chrome own 65% of the browser market share and Edge owns only 3.4% . But with the constant updates, i predict it will only increase.
Now Let's talk about the key features that we look in a web browser and how both stack up against each other on these.
Main features to look in a Browser:
- Speed and Performance
- User Interface
- Privacy and Safety
- Additional Features and Extensions
User Interface:
User Interface should be the first priority, since this might get hold of the customer for a longer time. Both Chrome and Edge kinda resembles the same UI and the difference is very minor. If you are used to Chrome's UI then Edge's UI would be very similar to this.
Eventhough, it comes to the personal preference, i might pick Chrome over Edge, purely because of I am accustomed to it and some extra features chrome can able to offer. The difference to Edge is very Minimal.
Speed and Performance:
This is the core reason a normal person would look for in a browser. In today's world nobody wants to wait and working on a much faster phase. Loading time and Response time are the two pillars of performance which can be improved by good RAM management.
Both Chrome and Edge works faster than their competitors and when it comes between them, they are neck to neck. Matching the Chrome's speed itself a big win for Edge. One thing to note here is according to many tests, Chrome takes more RAM and Edge does it with less RAM usage.
It does not make any difference in high end PC's but Edge will be the suitable choice for low config pc. Due to this I give the win to Edge.
Privacy and Safety:
This is the most discussed topic on the internet nowadays and the rise of digital marketing only worsens this. Now all of the big companies are collecting way more user data which makes users vulnerable of data leak
.
When it comes to privacy and safety, since both uses the chromium, they are offering many privacy and safety features. But Edge provides more features than Chrome on this case.
Another thing to consider is Chrome provides much faster updates, which means it makes chrome proof against latest malwares. On the other hand, Edge provides less updates than Chrome but it will provide regularly.
Data Privacy is way better in Edge. So Chrome is better in updates so it you are less vulnerable to malwares. If data privacy is your biggest thing then go for Edge.
Additional Features and Extensions:
When comes to extensions, without a debate, here we can declare Chrome is the winner, because its extensions library is huge. Eventhough Edge can use the Chrome extensions on their browsers, it works better on Chrome.
On the Features, I might side with Edge, because it provides lot of built in features, such as , Read Aloud (Read the webpage), Immerse Reader (Remove all the ads and annoying things and only provides the content to read, and the big thing is PDF reader & Editor (you can able to enter details on the PDF within the browser and you can able to sign with a single click).
Final Thoughts:
Chrome or Edge, finally it comes to the personal preference. Chrome is loaded with Google Ecosystem and Edge is loaded with Microsoft services. I will suggest Edge only if you are mainly looking to change the browser for due to data privacy and running on a low config system. Otherwise Chrome is the better choice, at least for now. Also Google is a better search engine than Bing.
Edge was good when it was launched and better on the first half of 2021, but now they are boosting their microsoft services into the browser which is kinda annoying for me, it is also difficult to change the settings. Lets see how they go from here!
